North America has become a very popular destination among international students. There are many top colleges that are present in highly developed countries like the U.S. and Canada. Fulbright Foreign Student Program

Description

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a cultural exchange program that aims at improving the intercultural competence and relations through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills between citizens of the US and other countries. The Fulbright scholarships are provided by the U.S. government to young professionals, artists and graduate students to help them to study in the United States for a period of one year or more. It is one of the most popular scholarships in the USA for international students that funded by the government. International students interested in a Masters/ P.H,D. degree course related to any field except for medicine can avail the benefits of this scholarship.

Scholarship value/duration

Generally, the grant funds tuition, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance, etc. The Fulbright program provides funding for the entire duration of the study.

Application Instructions

All Foreign Student Program applications are processed by bi-national Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies. Therefore, students must apply through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries. Deadline varies per country but is around February to October annually.

Number of Awards

Approximately 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year.

IDRC Research Awards

Through IDRC Research Awards, students from developing countries are provided financial aid in the form of education scholarships by the Canadian government. These student awards enable the candidates to pursue masters or doctoral level research degree at a recognized Canadian university for a period of 12 months.

Governance and Justice, Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund, Maternal and Child Health, Networked Economies, Think Tank Initiative, Foundations for Innovation, Agriculture and Food Security, Climate Change, Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia, Employment and Growth, Food, Environment, and Health.

Salary

Salary in Canada is CA$ 40,396-46,764 per annum; One month’s salary in Kenya: KES 139,082 – KES 219,327; Salary in Uruguay is $U659, 437 – $U 960,013 UYU per annum.

Scope

Research award recipients will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they have submitted and will receive hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the creation, use, and dissemination of knowledge from an international perspective.

Awardees are considered full-time employees of IDRC for payroll purposes. Benefits under the employment include employer contributions to the Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance, Employer Health Tax, and paid vacation leave. Travel and research expenses are also reimbursed, up to a maximum of CA$15,000.

Eligibility

This scholarship can be availed by the students who are pursuing or have completed a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university. Canadians, permanent citizens of Canada and citizens of developing countries are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The applicants can apply for positions that are available at IDRC’s head office in Ottawa, Canada and at IDRC’s regional offices in Montevideo, Uruguay and Nairobi, Kenya. The eligibility criteria is different for each location.

Other Eligibility Requirements

• A candidate’s research plan must focus on one or more developing countries.
• Candidates cannot receive any other Canadian government subsidy, bursary, award, scholarship, or honorarium, or be part of any research project funded by the federal government for the duration of the award.
• Each program has specific eligibility criteria in addition to the basic criteria, which must be satisfied.
• These awards may be part of an academic requirement.

Far East Asia, Middle East, North and Central America, North of Sahara, Oceania, South America, South Asia, South of the Sahara, West Indies.

Excluded Countries for Research

In principle, IDRC supports research in all developing countries. At this time, however, it doesn’t offer an award for research that involves the following developing countries: Mauritius, São Tomé and Principe, Saint Helena, Seychelles, Yemen, Southern and Eastern Europe, or Central Asia and South Caucasus and small island states, including Comoros, Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Gaza, Iran, Iraq, Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of), Libya, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Timor-Leste and Oceania

Countries Subject to Approval

A candidate can apply for research in the following countries and territories, but if you are recommended for an award, your application will then be subject to a further stage of approval within IDRC: Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Maldives, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Suriname, Tunisia, West Bank, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Zimbabwe.
