Founded in 1876, Johns Hopkins University is America’s first research university. It is located in Baltimore, Maryland. The university was named after its first benefactor Johns Hopkins, who was an American abolitionist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He donated $7 million for the establishment of a hospital and a university, making it the largest donation in the history of the United States at that time. Under the able guidance of its first president Daniel Coit Gilman, the university went on to revolutionize higher education in the U.S. through the amalgamation of research and education.
