Different Types of Scholarships available for M.S. Students

A Master of Science degree from a reputed college overseas holds a great value. MS graduates from top-notch institutes are rated very highly by the recruiters. But many students are not able to realise their dreams because of a lack of financial resources. There are many scholarships that can help the bright students to overcome the financial hurdles and help them in realising their dreams. These scholarships can help them by reducing their expenses related to the tuition fee, cost of living, course books etc. The available scholarships that are provided to students can be divided into three categories, namely government funded, university funded and private organization funded.

Government Funded Scholarships

Some governments provide scholarships for college students belonging to different countries on the basis of merit. These countries aim to attract top talent from all over the world by providing them incentives in the form of financial aid. Given below are some scholarships funded by the governments of countries across various continents:

North America

Fulbright program (USA)

The Fulbright scholarships are provided to young professionals, artists and graduate students to help them to study in the United States for a period of one year or more. It is also the most popular US government funded scholarship among the international students. International students interested in a course related to any field except for medicine can avail the benefits of this scholarship.

IDRC Research Awards (Canada)

Students from developing countries are provided financial aid in the form of scholarships by the Canadian government. These scholarships enable the candidates to pursue masters or doctoral level research degree at a recognized Canadian university.

Europe

Erasmus Mundus (EU)

The European Union’s Erasmus Mundus programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic cooperation between the EU and the rest of the world. The Erasmus Programme (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme established in 1987. The Erasmus Mundus programme is a parallel programme that is oriented towards globalising European education. Whereas the Erasmus Programme is open to Europeans, Erasmus Mundus is open to non-Europeans with Europeans being exceptional cases.

Commonwealth Scholarships (UK)

Students of Commonwealth countries who make a significant contribution to their home country after completion of higher education programme in the UK are provided Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission. The students who wish to pursue masters or doctoral courses of up to 3 years can avail the benefits of this scheme.

DAAD Scholarships (Germany)

International students studying at various degree levels in German universities are offered scholarships by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Australia

Endeavour Awards (Australia)

The Endeavour Awards is a scholarship program of the Australian Government provided to the students from all over the world. The aim of providing this scholarship is to encourage international students to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. The total award value is up to $201,000.

New Zealand Excellence Awards (New Zealand)

The New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) are jointly funded by New Zealand universities and Education New Zealand (ENZ). The NZEA features scholarships across all eight universities, offering an opportunity for Indian students to experience excellence offered in various programmes at universities given below:

  • AUT University
  • Lincoln University
  • Massey University
  • The University of Auckland
  • The University of Waikato
  • University of Canterbury
  • University of Otago
  • Victoria University of Wellington

Asia

Young Leaders Program (Japan)

Japanese government provides scholarships to Indian students interested in pursuing a master’s degree courses in the fields of business administration, law, local governance and public administration. Only six students can avail this scholarship for a period of one year. Round trip airfare is also covered in this scholarship.

Government of Russia Federation Scholarships (Russia)

Foreign students can avail state scholarships amounting to 1500 rouble a month. The facilities covered under this scholarship are free tuition fees, maintenance allowance and student accommodation etc. These scholarships were awarded to 1,500 students in 2017.

University Funded Scholarships

Harvard University (USA)

The financial aid provided by Harvard is need-blind, which means the financial need will not spoil any candidate’s chances of selection. The aid provided at Harvard is also need-based and doesn’t have anything to do with merit. Approximately, 70 percent of the students at Harvard receive some form of aid, and about 60 percent receive need-based scholarships and pay an average of $12,000 per year.

New York University (USA)

A limited number of international students receive Wagner Scholarships at NYU every year. Partial to full tuition fees is provided to the students under this scholarship ranging from $25,000 to $47,000.

Clarendon Scholarships at the University of Oxford (UK)

The Clarendon Scholarship Fund is a prestigious graduate scholarship scheme covering the entire tuition and college fee including a generous grant for living expenses. Around 140 new scholarships are provided to eligible graduate applicants (including international students) at the University of Oxford every year. These scholarships are provided on the basis of academic excellence and potential across all degree-bearing subjects at the graduate level at the University of Oxford.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships (UK)

Gates Cambridge Scholarships cover the full cost of studying at Cambridge namely: university fees, maintenance allowances, airfare, and some dependent’s allowance. They are awarded to students for graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The international students from all over the world can avail the benefits of this scholarship.

Adelaide Scholarships International (Australia)

The University of Adelaide offers the Adelaide Scholarships that include course tuition fees, annual living allowance, and health insurance. The aim of this program is to attract high quality international postgraduate students to increase the research strength in the University of Adelaide.

University of Sydney International Research Scholarships (Australia)

University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS) covers tuition fees and living expenses of the students for up to three years. Through this scholarship, the University of Sydney aims at enhancing the quality of research work by attracting top talent from all over the world.

Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program at the University of Toronto (Canada)

The university of Toronto recognizes the international students through the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program which covers their tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years. In order to avail the benefits of this program, the students must portray exceptional academic achievement and creativity. They must also be recognized as leaders within their school.

Private Organisation Funded Scholarships

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries. The scholarship is only awarded to the students who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded in the form of a combination of an equal amount of loan and grant.

Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarships

The Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust awards scholarships to Indian women graduates from recognised Indian universities who wish to pursue higher education abroad. The subject areas that are included in this scholarship are Health and Population Sciences, Education, International Development, Social Studies and Social Work. The value of the scholarship varies according to the financial circumstances of the candidate.

Inlaks Scholarship

The Inlaks-Shivdasani Foundation grants Inlaks study abroad scholarships to exceptionally talented post-graduate Indian students who wish to study or gain professional training at international universities based in America and Europe. The scholarship covers tuition and living expenses up to $100,000. Only candidates less than 30 years of age who have secured admission to a top-ranking University are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
