About the University of Toronto

The University of Toronto was established in 1827 by the Royal Charter and was the first institution to facilitate higher learning in Canada. As the charter played a role in its inception, the university was formerly known as the “King’s College”. It was controlled by the Church of England until 1850 and acquired its current name after becoming a secular institution. 

Three campuses comprise the University of Toronto. The main campus, also known as the St. George campus, is located in Toronto. The other two campuses are situated in Scarborough and Mississauga – the east and west suburban regions of Canada – respectively. The institution is well-known for its research facilities and was the birthplace of stem cell research, artificial cardiac pacemakers, and insulin, among others. 

Also, the university holds the distinction of being the site of the first successful nerve and lung transplants in the world. Owing to these achievements, the University of Toronto ranking is high and is currently ranked 26th by the QS World University rankings. 

In addition to research, the institution prides itself on the array of programs it offers. The University of Toronto offers over 300 postgraduate programs and 700 undergraduate programs across various fields. It also boasts of distinguished alumni. They include Nobel laureates such as William Faulkner, and Frederick Banting, among others. The institution has over 6,22,900 alumni across the world. 

The University of Toronto has a high and diverse student population. It has over 95,000 students enrolled in 2020-2021. Of these, over 25,000 are international students from over 164 countries. While these numbers may seem high, it is fairly difficult to secure admission at the institution. Currently, the University of Toronto’s acceptance rate stands at 43%.
