Colorado School of Mines

The Colorado School of Mines (also known as Mines or CSM) is a public research university in Golden, Colorado. During the 1850s, the city served as an important supply centre for miners and the area’s residents. Therefore, in order to fulfil the need for an institution of  higher education and a school dedicated to the study of mines, George M. Randall, bishop of Colorado, founded the Jarvis Hall Collegiate School in 1870. 

In 1874, as part of the institution, the Territorial School of Mines was established. When Colorado gained statehood in 1876, the school became a public university and was christened Colorado School of Mines. While the initial programmes offered at the university dealt with the study and assaying of minerals, its focus eventually grew to include the earth sciences, energy, and environment. 

CSM’s campus spans 373 acres and houses several academic and research buildings, student centres, state-of-the-art laboratories, and athletic facilities. It also hosts a research facility for the United States Geological Survey that accommodates the National Earthquake Information Center. Mines is renowned for its courses in earth sciences. It holds the distinction of being the only university in the world to provide doctoral programmes in five major earth sciences: petroleum engineering, mining engineering, geology and geological engineering, geochemistry, and geophysics.

Courses Offered and Research

There are 16 academic departments and 14 interdisciplinary programmes at Mines. They offer over 70 undergraduate and graduate programmes in diverse fields such as Advanced Energy Systems, Business Economics, Geochemistry, Nuclear Science, Military Science, and Space Resources, among others. Admissions at Colorado School of Mines

Over 7000 students from 80 countries and all 50 states of the US were enrolled in various degree programmes at Mines in the fall of 2021. The university has a student-faculty ratio is 16:1; over 27 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students.  Also, CSM has an acceptance rate of 57 percent. Undergraduate Admission 

Aspirants wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree at Mines must apply only. This can be done through two methods: Common Application and Golden Application. The Common Application is an undergraduate online application that is accepted by over 1000 participating institutions in the US, Canada, Japan, and a few European countries. 

On the other hand, the Golden Application is an admission platform specific to Mines and can be found on its official website.  Below are some of the common requirements for undergraduate courses. 

• Academic requirements 

The applicant must be one who is applying while completing high school, graduated high school and has never enrolled in college, possesses a GED, or has been home-schooled but has never enrolled in a university or college. 

• Transcripts requirements

Official high school marksheets/transcripts must be sent through mail or electronically to Mines by the high school that the aspirant has attended. Applicants may also upload their unofficial high school transcript within 24 hours of submitting the online application.  Students who have completed high school outside of the US must also submit a credential evaluation.

• Admission information for educational systems and specific countries 

The submission of this information is essential and supplements the admission requirements for international students. In the case of students educated in India, information regarding the following must be presented: 

• Completion of 12 years of education and appearing for Class 10 and 12 state/board examinations. 
• Obtaining an overall minimum average course equivalent of  50-59 percent (Second Class) or above. This must be on the grading scale on any of these Secondary School Leaving Certificates: Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC), Senior Secondary Certificate, Pre-University Certificate, Pre-Degree Certificate, Intermediate Examination, All India and Delhi Senior School Certificate (AISSCE), and Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE)

• English proficiency requirements

Scores secured on English proficiency examinations such as TOEFL, IELTS, DUOLINGO, and Cambridge English, must be submitted by aspirants. 

• Personal statements and Letters of recommendation (LOR)

Applicants have the option of submitting a personal statement along with their applications. They can talk about themselves, their educational background, experiences that have had a profound impact on their educational life, and so on. While LORs are not compulsory, students are permitted to attach them to their applications. 

• Demonstrate financial resources 

Applicants are required to submit proof of financial resources after enrollment. Following admission, students must seek the assistance of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office for the submission of their financial documents (bank statement, certificate of balance, and scholarship letter, among others).

Graduate Admission 

The admission process and eligibility requirements vary depending on the graduate course chosen and the department offering it. However, the admission prerequisites are similar to that of undergraduate courses with the addition of a Statement of purpose/statement of goals and 

curriculum vitae (cv) or resume.

Fees and Scholarships

The cost of education at Mines is quite affordable. In 2020, the university was placed 7th by Payscale on the Best Value College’s list. The Cost Of Attendance for non-resident undergraduates (on campus) is approximately US$ 61,665. It is inclusive of Tuition, Books and Supplies, Personal Allowance, and Transportation Allowance, among other expenses. In the case of non-resident graduates (on campus) is approximately US$ 64,415 (inclusive of all expenses).
