Yet, it has persevered through all of them. For example, in 1923, major parts of the campus including classrooms, the library, and the chapel were destroyed in a fire. However, the Board of Trustees immediately voted to rebuild the campus; thereby, serving as the foundation of the university as it exists today.
Initially, the institution only enrolled residents of North Carolina. Later in the mid-1970s, it began enrolling a significant number of students from the mid-Atlantic states. By 2013, 82% of incoming students were from outside the state.
