Scholarships for the US given by Indian Foundations

Every year, many students dream of studying abroad for their Masters Degree. Universities are always looking for talented individuals, but students often fall victim due to the lack of funds and their dreams are never realised.

In the USA, most Universities provide financial aid to international students, in the form of scholarships or stipend for research work. For students with limited funds, this is a good option as it supplements their finances. In addition to this, there are a few Indian foundations which provide financial aid to a selected few who have completed their GRE exam, especially to pursue a higher degree in the USA. These measures have been put in place to allow every deserving individual a chance to pursue their dreams and add to the talent pool of the nations.

• JN Tata Endowment: The JN Tata Endowment is offered to Indian nationals and graduates from a recognised Indian University with consistently good academic records. It is usually a loan scholarship, though selected students may also qualify for a gift award.

This was set up in 1892 by Jamsetji Tata, to encourage young individuals to take up higher studies in some of the best Universities across the world. This scholarship program selects 120 individuals every year, from students in their final year of graduation to career professionals up to the age of 45.

The amount loaned or awarded is decided by some norms laid down for the purpose, and may or may not cover all the expenses of studies. The scholarships are available for higher degrees in all disciplines and subjects, and it is not necessary to have admission/acceptance letters from the desired Universities at the time of applying for this scholarship.

After the initial screening of applications, the shortlisted applicants are called for an interview in person with subject experts. The final selection is made based on these interviews, which are usually held between March and June every year in Mumbai.

• SN Bose Scholarship Program: The SN Bose Scholarship Program is offered to nurture young innovators and thought leaders by the Science and Engineering Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (Government of India), the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), along with the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW).

This was started in honour of Satyendra Nath Bose (1894 – 1974), a visionary Indian physicist, known for the discovery of Bosons with Einstein and his work on quantum mechanics in the 1920s. This program works as a dynamic and transformative student exchange between institutions in India and the USA. Students in the fields of Chemical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Atmospheric and Earth Sciences, studying in a premier institute of higher education in India are eligible for it.

The scholarship includes a stipend, accommodation expenses, and travel expenses. The application is accompanied by letters of recommendation along with other supporting documents. The deadlines for applying are at the end of October every year, and students who have completed their degree in that calendar year or are yet to complete their graduation are eligible.

• Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship: The Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship is a tie-up between the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Reliance Industries Limited, to support Indian nationals in obtaining an MBA from Stanford.

Stanford GSB focuses on global management education and has enrolled many Indian students in their courses. This fellowship aims at students who would otherwise deter from these courses due to lack of funds. The students are selected based on their academic merits, their commitment to developing India, and their financial need. They are required to return to India after completion of the course and work for an Indian organisation for a minimum of two years.

Around 50 students are selected each year by the Reliance Fellowship program, and Stanford may choose up to 5 of these fellows. They receive funds for the cost of tuition and other related fees for both years of the course. The applicants are required to meet all criteria of the fellowship program as well as admission requirements of Stanford GSB.

• Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship: Fulbright-Nehru fellowships are offered to students with exemplary academic records residing in India who would like to pursue their Masters and Doctoral degree programs at selected Universities in the USA. These scholarships are awarded in the areas of Arts and Culture Management with a focus on Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Higher Education Administration, International Legal Studies, Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies/Gender Studies.

Individuals who show high levels of motivation, leadership qualities, have three or more years of professional work experience and a commitment to return and contribute to their communities qualify for the fellowship. During the fellowship, the student is affiliated with one University, and expenses of tuition fee, accommodation, travel are provided, along with visa support.

Scholarships are a great way to allow every meritorious student to achieve and live their dream of studying in a world-class institution. There are a lot of scholarships which are awarded to students on basis of their academic performance, GRE scores etc.Therefore it is advisable to carefully read and research on the terms & conditions of the scholarship. Even students with a less dire need of financial aid must apply, because the investment of studying abroad is massive, and scholarships lessen the burden a little.
