Master’s of Science in ECE program makes students familiar with the fundamental concepts of electrical or computer engineering. It also provides them an opportunity to get a specialisation in an aspect related to these fields. The students are allowed to select an educational program of their interest, which is best suited to their career-related goals. An academic advisor and faculty member helps them in figuring out their areas of interest.

Concentrations

In order to allow the students to focus on their specific areas of interest, the students are provided the chance to choose from the four concentrations. These four concentrations related to the field of electrical and computer engineering are:

  • Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)
  • Computer Security (CSec)
  • Data and Network Science (DNS)
  • Wireless Systems (WS)

The degree upon its completion will be referred to as M.S. in ECE with a concentration. The concentrations can be one or more in number. Students satisfying the requirements for more than one concentration may acknowledge all for which they fulfil the requirements.

The students must fill out the Concentration Declaration form in their final semester. The form is then signed by the faculty member serving as the academic advisor to that student. All concentrations require a minimum of four ECE courses. M.S. in ECE students may graduate even without completing a concentration.

Core values

The ECE Department is known for its innovation. The faculty and students in this department are known for their enthusiasm. The research work at the CMU has made a defining impact in various fields. The researchers in the ECE department come up with engineering solutions for the problems related to electrical and computer science

There is a lot of diversity at the CMU, which inculcates the culture of inclusion in the students enrolled in various programs. True insight and novel solutions are valued by the staffs and students alike. Students are encouraged to use their creativity to come up with engineering solutions and become leaders in their fields through an impeccable entrepreneurial spirit.

Student resources

The ECE department in CMU believes in developing well-rounded individuals. For this purpose, extracurricular activities are organized. There are many organisations and societies that are run by the students. Career talks are also held which give students the chance to develop professional skills. Beyond the department, the university also supports professional, social, technical and sporting activities. The students get to become a part of CMU’s many rich traditions including Student government, Booth, the Fence, Buggy, Kiltie Band, and Student Government.

De-stress with ECE

Every semester, de-stress with ECE events are held. During these events, many workshops are organised to discuss issues related to mental health including stress management. Snacks and catered meals are provided by the department during midterms and finals weeks. Wellness spaces can be visited by the students in the lounge area. Students can sit in these areas to de-stress themselves by writing encouraging notes to each other and their families.

Admissions

Application process

In order to apply for the program, the students must submit the documents like application itself, resume, LOR, SOP, GRE score report, and application fee. TOEFL or IELTS score must be submitted by all the international candidates.

Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Resume

The SOP and resume can be uploaded online, or entered directly into the online application as text.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Three LOR’s must be submitted as the part of the application process. The names, email id’s and titles of three recommenders must be entered, once you get the access of the online application. A link to the online application will then be sent to the recommenders. The recommenders must fill in the recommendations online. Any hard copy recommendation letters sent to the Admissions Office will be discarded.

GRE & TOEFL

ETS is responsible for conducting the GRE and TOEFL. GRE cut-off scores are not defined by the university. The scores are evaluated in the context of the entire application package.

The applicant whose native language is not English is required to take TOEFL test. The applicants who have graduated from a university in the U.S. are not required to appear for TOEFL test. The TOEFL total score of 84 is acceptable with sub-scores of 22 or above, for all individual sections. You can request ETS to send your scores to CMU Institution Code: 2074.. The admission committee will accept any CMU Department Code, as long as the Institution Code is correct.

The applicants can also appear for IELTS if for some reason they are unable to take the TOEFL test. But, the admission council prefers the TOEFL to IELTS. A minimum overall score of 7 is required on the IELTS, with minimum sub-scores of Reading-6.5, Listening-6.5, Speaking-6, and Writing-6.

The application must be completed only by the applicant. Applications submitted by third-party consulting companies will not be accepted. There are certain exceptions to this policy such as the application material submitted by a fellowship/scholarship organization, World Education Services, or ETS.

Application Fee & Status

The application fee is a one-time charge of $70. Re-applicants are required to pay the fee again. Due to the large number of applications and volume of email received daily from ECE applicants, it may not be possible to respond to individual requests for information. Please review the checklist in your online application to review completeness.

Tuition Fee & Financial aid

The professional M.S. Program is a self-funded, course only degree program. This program takes approximately 1.5 years (3 semesters). View information about the current tuition rate and cost of attendance.

Job prospects

There is a magnificent array of career opportunities for masters in electrical and computer engineering graduates. The students are hired as interns and full-time employees by many technology, finance, and consulting companies. Students can pursue their interests and work in fields like software, hardware systems, defence, space etc.

Job fairs

  • The fall career fair is offered by The College of Engineering at CMU for all technology-oriented companies. Student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosts an event called Technical Opportunities Conference (TOC).
  • Each spring, students from all the departments seeking job opportunities are provided the chance to participate in the Employment Opportunities Conference (EOC).

According to PayScale, the average annual salary of a masters in electrical and computer engineering graduate is $92,000. The top employers in this field are Intel Corporation, Qualcomm Inc., Amazon Inc., Nvidia Corp etc.
